Should I Repair or Replace My Appliance?

When an appliance breaks, one of the first questions is whether it makes more sense to repair it or replace it. The answer depends on more than just the age of the appliance.

The cost of the repair, the condition of the appliance, what’s actually wrong, and the cost of a comparable replacement can all factor into the decision.

A good rule of thumb is that if the repair will cost 50% or more of what it would cost to replace the appliance, replacement may make more sense. But that isn’t always the deciding factor.

When Repair May Make Sense

Repair may be worth considering when the appliance has otherwise been reliable, the repair cost is reasonable compared with replacement, or the problem can be corrected without a major investment.

There’s also something numbers alone don’t capture. Some customers have an older brand or model they really like and can no longer buy. In those cases, they may choose to repair it even when the cost might otherwise make replacement worth considering.

When Replacement May Make More Sense

Replacement may be worth considering when the appliance has multiple problems, is nearing the end of its useful life, or the repair will cost 50% or more of the price of a comparable replacement.

The key is knowing what’s actually wrong before making that decision.
